What did I learn?

In my last post I wrote about a woman I helped to re-learn to read. What did I learn from her? An injury to the brain can make us not like something that we once loved. Children with no acquired injury but with reading or language impairments, after years of failure often want to avoid the thing that is unpleasant. People with reading impairments sometimes fatigue more easily. They work twice as hard as others doing the same thing. Is it a wonder that some people will avoid reading at all cost? When helping young adults with reading impairments it’s imporant to remember that fear and anxiety are often apart of language impairments. Addressing fears as well as the resulting low self esteem are key in addressing reading impairments as well as other language disabilities.
