Another client had severe spelling deficits after years of remediation was still a very poor spontaneous speller. With direct spelling remediation, however; two areas improved. First spell check recognized the spelling of words that originally had been so different from traditional spelling that the program gave no appropriate suggestions. Secondly, she began to recognize when words were misspelled which meant that she could edit some of her own spelling errors. However, her spontaneous spelling continued to be problematic and one of the areas that could potentially impact her academic career. She needed to pass the essay portion of the MCAS. MCAS rules would not allow her to use a computer and her unusual spellings often led to misinterpretation of her writing. Should after years of remediation for this problem this client continues remediation? I don’t think there is one right answer, but by collaborating with the student and her parent we came to a joint decision on this matter. What do you think?
