It has taken years of work two times a week to bring Renee’s reading rate up to a functional rate that can support her high school academics. However, Renee’s reading rate is still not grade level and because she easily fatigues when reading, remediation can not be the sole solution. She does not always read her class text, since her comprehension continues to be better than her reading and she continues to fatigues when reading. Even though her reading has greatly improved she continues to need additional supports. Sometimes she uses books on tapes and the Kurweil program to help with the increased demands of reading honors level work. Direct instruction in skimming and scanning also has been important. With intervention, technology, and improved understanding of her learning style Renee is now in honors classes, on the debate team, and is making decisions about college in the near future.
